A New Era for Arts & Culture in Southbury

Updated: Apr 25

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Southbury, January 16, 2025 – The Southbury Arts & Culture Subcommittee, a dedicated arm of the town’s Economic Development Commission since 2022, is embarking on an exciting new chapter. With the full support of town officials, the committee is transitioning into an independent nonprofit organization, the Southbury Arts & Culture Alliance (SACA).

This transformation into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit marks a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to promote, develop, and support the arts in Southbury. By stepping out from under the town’s financial umbrella, SACA will have greater flexibility to expand its programming, attract new funding sources, and enhance its impact on the community.

“This transition allows us to broaden our reach and improve our offerings,” said Kelly Keenan, Chair of the former Arts & Culture Subcommittee. “As a nonprofit, we will be able to actively fundraise and secure grants to sustain and grow our programs.”

The mission and goals of the Southbury Arts & Culture Alliance remain unchanged:

  • Promote, inspire, and support arts and cultural activities within the community.

  • Facilitate public art initiatives and cultural programming.

  • Enhance community engagement, education, and equitable access to arts and culture.

  • Serve as a resource for local governments and organizations on arts and culture policies and practices.

The transition process is well underway, with a board of directors forming and bylaws being finalized. SACA anticipates filing for official nonprofit status by March/April, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing arts programming.

“This is an incredible opportunity to strengthen the arts community in Southbury,” Keenan added. “With community support and strategic partnerships, we can create a more vibrant cultural landscape for residents and artists alike. We look forward to working closely with the town and other organizations in this exciting new role.”
